Signaller assessment panel interview help

Hi everyone,

Just thought I would join have been looking at the forums throughout my application process and have found a lot of the posts useful when preparing for the signaller assessment.

I now have a date for my interview, and was wondering if any of you have had an interview recently and have any ideas of what sort of questions are asked. I haven't been able to find too much info.

Also I'm wondering if it is still a worthwhile career to get into? I am hoping to move up to higher grade boxes eventually of successful. I am in a stable job and don't want to be worried about my box being closed in the next five years or so.

What vacancy have you gone for?

i had an interview on 29th Jan and its a new interview process.

The one question I really remember from mine (October last year) was something along the lines of "you're planning a major event that will require a road to be closed. How do you go about this?"

All the interview questions revolve around the 8 non technical skills that NR are now very focussed on.

As Breen says, if you give us more info, we can answer better.

The vacancy I have gone for is Leuchars signal box (fife, scotland) it's either a grade 2 or 3 I think. I'm 27 and been a postman for the last four years since I got my degree. Not going to use that degree though very interested in this position and trying to work up to bigger boxes.

I have read about the planning a street party question and also the non technical bits so will def look into that

GO TO THE BOX.

I was the only one of my lot that did, and I think it really helped.

In general, I think you're in a good position. Young, educated and keen will fit well in the new railway. Be ambitious, and you'll be in Glasgow or Edinburgh in no time.

Ive just finished my first week in a grade 2 job, and next week I've got interviews at 3 Bridges and West Hampstead (both Grade 8)

It used to be about experience and who you know, now its about a willingness and ability to learn.

Yeah going to the box is the best thing you can do, i had an interview on the 29th i visited the box, i've got an interview on 21st i visited the box on tuesday! The signallers can really provide you with really great information and you actually get to see what they do! Just ring them up or knock on the door and take some biscuits they'll be happy enough for you to visit!

Wow so they wouldn't actually mind if I just went up to the box that sounds like a good idea

I'd try and arrange it with the LOM, then they'll know about your keenness in advance.

I visited the box after work today for half an hour or so was interesting to see inside and how it all works. Some of the lingo went right through me though but hopefully it's passed on to the line manager that I payed them a visit was also interesting to hear that the box is meant to close around 2025. Gives me 11 years to move up to a higher grade, here's hoping I'm successfull.

Just be sure to include "well, when I visited the box..." at interview!
