I don't think there would be a problem going up and knocking on the door and asking when convenient if you could come and have a look and ask them some questions, just tell them you'll bring the biscuits! I'm in the fortunate position that my dad works for Network Rail and can obtain the phone number but the signal box i visited last week said they like it when people come and visit. I'd suggest going on a sunday as it will be quiet and they won't be too busy. When you go and visit the signaller they will let the LOM know that you've been in!
You might get a right misery who tells you he's too busy, but nothing ventured nothing gained, good luck !
