although from what I've read now Southampton has stolen most of bournemouths passengers but that's for an entire different discussion. All of my trips next year are from Exeter.

Last time I was at Bournemouth airport I thought Roger Moore was going to come round the corner sipping a Martini and park himself on the 1970's lounge seating.

I've always had to present them, but never noticed them scanning them, is the scanning device quite discreet?

I suppose the best comparison is the way they scan things at a DIY store check out. Once I had a boarding pass rejected due to poor print quality and had to go back to the check in desks (Swiss, not Ryanair, fortunately :D)

Reasonably. Also, not all airports scan airport-printed boarding passes (the logic being they want to filter out counterfeit ones, and people are less likely to be able to counterfeit an airport one).

You would think it would lead to more trouble for the airline if something happened to you between checking in on-line and stepping on the airplane.

Looking for people that aren't even the airport etc but as stated its a revenue opportunity not a process efficiency.

They only care if you've dropped off luggage and you have to do that seperately when you get to the airport.

The ones I have issues with are the collect at the station ones. I've had people say, oh i never had time to collect it, but here is my code.

The issue with this is Southerns Rainy Day policy. If the ticket is not collected a refund can be claimed and the T&C state the ticket must be collected for the trip or you will have to buy a new ticket. We have been looking at a way of noting the codes down so that when the person tried to claim a refund we can go, but you did travel, but thats a long way off at the mo.

On Southern we can end up carrying a Advantix, Chip and Pin, Oyster reader and Key reader.

And as for mobile phone coverage. Its very patchy on the BML with little to none between Three Bridges and Hassocks, its goes 5 bars to 1, to none, to 2 within moments, plus the Arun Valley is the same, plus Quarry, Balcombe and Clayton tunnels make life even more fun.

To allow Ryanair to levy an extra fee if you don't. ;)

How bizarre. As one who only uses planes when I have no other choice (like trans atlantic) it seems that its apparant that this isn't check-in but rather an extra process that needs to be done several hours before to _not_ have to pay a fee.

How very strange.

Sort of. The justification is that if you don't check in online you will have to take up staff time reprinting the boarding pass. But the fee seems to me to be set at a level in excess of the cost of that time.

I have yet to see a fee that Lyingair charges that is not punitive. I have flown with them, only when I don't have to pay the additional fees of course.

Quite. You can get very low fares if you are savvy enough to avoid all the extra fees. I suspect, in practice, many passengers end up paying more than those travelling on 'full service' carriers.

I know somebody who worked on check-in for an airport handling Ryanair. They had targets to meet in charges made to flyers. It is part of their business model.

We found a solution to this. Fly with kayaks and hold baggage. We did pay a lot more than minimum when booking. At baggage check-in, they could not have been more helpful. We paid in a lot in advance for that extra baggae. Closest they get to First Class passengers ! (maybe)

The same applied to the orange low cost carrier. Both from Stansted.

In case the search engines are about, I do NOT know if either are still offering this service to kayakers.

Well tomorrow is the day I'm going to try it out :D.

I will of course have the print outs with me just in case! ;)

Update: Well sadly the PDFs of the tickets shown on the screen wasn't accepted so it likes like we'll have to stick to printing them out, although the guard said that he used to until a manger told him no.
