Should Hazel Grove to Stockport still be electrified?

It would be excellent to see the HVL wired at some point - from a railway point of view as it would speed up Trans Pennine journey times a bit. However even as regular user of the HVL, I'd quite happily keep the pacers for a while longer as wires would be a bit of a blot on the absolutely stunning Edale Valley. The views from Mam Tor/Lord's Seat are simply mesmerizing on a summers day, wires would slightly 'ruin' the view.

I share your passion for Edale, however the wires do not detract from other sections of our network. I remember the first time driving over Beattock and seeing that the masts were painted a sort of yellowy/brown so that they were less obvious, if only they had done the same with the new M74/A74(M) or whatever that stretch is called!
Anyway, with the MML electrified as well as additional routes (Sheff-Donc/Leeds etc which will be next) then Hope Valley is an obvious candidate for electrification. Although that does mean that Cleethorpes may loose it's Manchester link. However faster Nottingham/Sheffield - Manchester - Liverpool (and Preston maybe) would be for the 'greater good' I am sure!

Catenaries

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er hills and vales
When all at once I saw a crowd
A host, of Network Rail catenaries

With apologies to William Wordsworth

Wordsworth, of course, didn't like railways!

"once Deansgate to Leyland is electrified"........OK, got you now, should have taken you at your word. For one furrowed-brow moment there I was trying to imagine Alderley Edge to Bolton via Deansgate Junction!

Aren't most EMU's Inferior to 323's acceleration ;) ?

In the case of the 319s the acceleration isn't good enough for stopping services on the WCML, the 350s are considered to have acceleration good enough stoppers on the WCML I don't know how 323 vs 350 acceleration compares.

According to Wikipedia, there is one return EMU service in the evening.
The 19:22 Piccadilly-Hazel Grove, which is currently formed by a 323, will stop running come the May timetable change as it will start at Preston
Are there any longer pieces of railway, anywhere in the UK, which were wired at 25kV AC specifically for electric passenger services, but have now reverted to diesel-only operation? Excluding freight, depot and diversionary/infill electrification.

And will an occasional check by the NR measurement train be sufficient to ensure the wires remain serviceable?

Well not unused but currently the wires between Piccadilly and Trafford Park have similar usage to those between Stockport and Hazel Grove. I think even most of the freight is diesel.

Carstairs-Edinburgh came close to that state when Voyagers replaced the loco-hauled services from Birmingham/Manchester.
It is only now getting more electric services with TP 350s from Manchester (and it has lost most EC Class 91 workings).
Also VT now mix Pendolinos with the Voyagers.
Wolverhampton-Stafford was also practically all diesel-worked while Central Trains used 170s on Stansted-Liverpool along with XC Voyagers.
