A vague thought, that probably wouldn't work due to pathing constraints or whatever, but hey, I thought I'd set it down.
A couple of years back, when the line through St. Helens was blockaded for whatever reason, Northern ran a temporary hourly service from Blackpool to Ormskirk. The train ran non-stop Blackpool to Preston, before running all stops along the Ormskirk branch, in the process giving the line perhaps its best ever level of local service.
I wonder, should Blackpool lose it's Transpennine service temporarily due to electrification delays and 170 problems, could running something like this act as partial compensation? For Blackpool travellers, there'd be an hourly fast service to Preston to connect there to fast trains, and for passengers on the Ormskirk line there'd be a hugely improved level of service provision that has been called for for years.
Like I say, probably pie-in-the-sky thinking, but it was just a bit of a "mental doodle!" Any thoughts?
EDIT, this is probably in the wrong sub-forum.
