I've never had a problem? I can always remember EMT's HSTs. Standard HST and pullman rake respectively: standard class black, first class red

PC-A-B-C-D-E-F-G-J-PC

PC-A-C-D-E-F-G-H-J-PC

Coach A is always quiet coach, Coach F is the buffet

Yet on NXEC the set starts with B and not A....

is B the TGS, if so that's odd? I know it starts with B on 225s, which come to think of it is even more odd as they're semi-permanent sets!

Both HSTs and 225s on NXEC start with B, as coach A was the smoking coach pre smoking ban. GNER were last TOC to ban smoking prior to the ban IIRC (except Caledonian Sleeper)

so 'coach' A is actually just the guard's area, and immediately behind it, albeit the same coach body, is coach B? odd

I thought the area at the back of the PC was A? Isn't there a seat/desk in there for the Guard?

yeah, just seems odd, AFAIK all other TOCs just treat it as 1 coach, even XC on their HSTs (well, unrefurb anyway) have coach F or J as the TGS, EMT treat it as coach A

One of the longest routes doesn't have a shop. You think when people are travelling the whole route, you would want something warm to eat, other than soup!!!
I swear that Inter-City had a buffet in all there XC trains.
That's like putting a Double Decker on a route on a 15 minute frequency, and having to go through a Village where there is hardly any room... and to make it worse, another one comes in the oppisite direction.

Oh, that's already happened. (Not mentioning names NCT (Oops))

;) ;)

it's actually every 10 minutes you muppet ;) the number 10 (the route you're thinking of?;) gets dead busy at peak, I travel on it at the much below peak times, half the time it's me only, on a 90 seat bus!) think that's bad - should have tried Wrightbus Fusions (bendies) on the number 58 round the tight corners in town

Anyway, I think the shop's range of food was poor anyway, so maybe not that much different now?

That bus scenario is pretty common in the South West

AIUI it is to do with cycle reservations on NXEC which are in coach A. Other TOCs do not limit the cycle reservations in the same way. This coincided with the re-lettering in association with the AIUI the increase in set lengths and banning of Smoking. Smokers could no longer request coach A, and this acted as a reminder to staff and customers that this was a no-smoking seat. Since all trains were the same length, it allowed for a fleet standard set of coach letters which did not involve altering the FC letters, since it could have led to staff assuming that a coach was SC (as that letter had previously been SC) when in fact it was FC, or vice versa. Can't remember which way round it was and now my head hurts! :|

I believe it's to keep the lettering consistent throughout all of their trains, IIRC 'A' is used for bike/luggage reservations in the power car or TGS of the HSTs. Not sure what letter is used for the DVT space as that's at the opposite end of the train.

225 FC goes up to N IIRC so P for the DVT would make sense (with standard avoidance of I and O)

Bit like FGW's 158 798 then, letter from front to rear is B, A, C.

Having a middle coach it's not like you can say it's been shunted wrong! Just some plank put the letters mixed for some weird reason.

NXEC have the Quiet Coach as Coach B to emphasise its the quiet coach. B Quiet is the slogan.

More sensibly placed than Coach D, like it was!

Unlike FGW's random idea of moving the Family Carriage from Coach E (nearest the buffet) to Coach D (one further down)...

In case you havn't noticed the disabled coach is now in E quite sensible and so the family carriage was moved.

Yeah thats like when central trains made all of the 2 coach158's and 170's have Coaches A & C. at first i wondered why, but I realised that it was because the 3car 170s were coaches A,B,C so they could reserve seats in coach a, c whatever the train length and keep coach b open

Why is that sensible? Unless the disabled / buffet coach has had a ramp fitted I see no benefit having the two together vice having them apart.

That is the only reason i could see fr keeping buffet and disabled together was if the train carried its own ramp (for wheelchair and trolley access) instead of using the one at each station.
