The Met Office have issued an Amber weather warning for parts of the Midlands, primarily affecting areas of the South West and South East Midlands, towards Worcester and Oxford, as well as a large area of the West Midlands. A small part of the East Midlands is also included.

The storms are currently over the Home Counties, heading in a broadly North Westerly direction.

The West Coast Mainline is currently experiencing disruption due to flooding between Watford Junction and Milton Keynes Central. Flooding has caused Watford Junction station to close at the time of this post.

The picture attached shows the areas affected, as well as reading:
‘Active thunderstorms will bring heavy rainfall, lightning, strong winds, and hail. Travel disruption and surface water flooding are likely’

Been keeping an eye on the forecast though the day and it keeps changing all the time. At the moment it is blue sky but there is some thunder a little way north I think but not getting much louder thankfully. We are just outside the amber zone and the maps would suggest we won't get anything.

Last night was horrible with almost constant thunder and lighting for about 2 hours.

Lots of disruption on the Highland Main Line - flooding between Inverness and Carrbridge this morning and lightning strikes disrupting signalling systems this afternoon.

A number of active cells in the north-west currently. After the earlier disruption hopefully the WCML will be spared further difficulties. Manchester Airport is another matter: nothing going in or out with lots of aircraft orbiting the holding points.

Since my last post we have had a storm with a large amount of rain (which it it still is).

Seems that services are no longer running north of Derby due to a points failure with 1V66 getting to St Mary's (just north of Derby) and now reversed north and heading to Chesterfield.

45 minute biblical storm around Gloucestershire. I'm in Stroud and there have been lots of sirens heading up the Brimscombe valley since 19:15hrs.

Worryingly 1B27 has not moved in a while. It's on the line up the Brimscombe valley..

Edit, it has moved.

Our current (first) one just finishing is a belter...
My gauge says just over an inch in 1/2 hour. Long overdue, pity we didn't have anything gentler beforehand.

As well as a fault with the signalling system north of Derby, there has now been a landslip near Dore and Totley. Delays of up to 2 hours as a result.

The MML has pretty much collapsed this evening. A points failure just north of Derby (caused by lightning), sending everything via the Erewash, then a Landslip north of Dronfield sending everything via Beighton!

Beat me to it!!

It is believed (but unconfirmed) that lightning is the cause of this afternoons tram derailment at Bulwell, Notts

Amazed to hear all this weather is going on: no sign of anything at all here, down in southern Hampshire.

Yesterday was a bit ominous, but it's basically been dry, sunny and fresher than the last couple of days this evening. So maybe these storms are bringing in cooler air from the SE?

During the set up we've had over the past few days, the Midlands has been the 'breeding ground' for storms, as they tracked NW. These start as small showers over the SE/Home Counties. These form over a large area of land and generally intensify as they start travelling north.

For far South Eastern and South Coast areas, for storms, you need to generally rely on stuff being imported over from France.

Possibly better put in the 'new National Rail website' thread, but it is almost impossible to get a good picture of what is going on across the network anymore from there, because it is all far too spaced out and also every single disruption bar the very basic description will open in a new window (that you then have to scroll down to get to the actual information, as that doesn't display even on a 1920x1080 desktop screen - the description starts about 1.5 pages from the top). So you have to click, scroll, back, scroll, click, scroll, back, scroll..... whereas before it was simply click, click, click. At least 4 mouse movements for every one previous. This is not an improvement!

Is there any other site that aggregates disruption information for the whole network in a more user-friendly manner?

Nothing of interest happening here in Ely either, despite storm warnings for the last three days we've seen nothing at all bar a lot of sun and occasionally a bit of cloud.

Nothing of note down weather wise on the Sussex Coast. It lashed it down about 1am for a bit and a few bangs and wallops but that’s it.

That said, the chaos at East Croydon today with platform 1 out of commission led to an awkward trip to work for the missus.

Had a long go slow period on the 1530 Glasgow bound Avanti service out of London Euston. Guard said Network Rail had instructed the speed restriction (seemed to be about 40mph) which occurred south of Birmingham. Arrived 38mins late.

The storm finally hit Hereford a little after 4pm, maybe nearer 5pm, and I was incredibly grateful to be at work, in the dry. Hail in June is a bit worrying, the sideways rain and the usual places have mini floods, but thankfully the storm passed by in a reasonable amount of time.

It's been due for so long here I was wondering when it would arrive, if it would at all. Hot and sunny almost all day, so it was a bit of a surprise to observe it while at work!

Still really warm here, especially for this time of night!

Kingston today, two hour-long storms in the afternoon, mostly to the north and north-west, some torrential rain (caused flooding in my kitchen via under the back door); some very interesting routeing into Heathrow, some go-arounds. Sunday: one hour-and-a-half hour storm in the afternoon, heavy rain, just at the time I had intended to see the vintage London buses on the 65 and 71 routes.

We had a heavy thunderstorm in MK yesterday. Very heavy between 3 and 4 and then rumbling away on and off until gone 6. Local roads flooded for a short period and I can well imagine there were issues on the tracks.

May I ask why? It's not unusual.

I can't say as much as I've ever seen hail in June before!

Hail is very common with thunderstorms.

Perhaps I'm just not terribly used to seeing such storms at this time of year then. I definitely associate hail with winter weather, perhaps my knowledge of meterological events has slipped.

It's gone back to hot weather here, and glorious blue skies, so the expected 'clearing of the air' hasn't happened. Still, I'm not complaining too much about that as it's great for getting outside in. Talking of which, I'd best get my sun cream applied!

Hail is most common in the early summer, particularly in our latitudes and is actually quite rare in winter

The WHL is closed between Crianlarich and FW because of damage near Tulloch. If it's any consolation the A86 us closed as well.

That's generally associated with the passing of a cold / occluded front, I think. If it's just thunderstorms breaking out because of the heat & humidity, that alone doesn't shift the airmass they emerged in.

Fair enough, I clearly don't have a good memory of this sort of thing from geography lessons a few decades ago!

Hail actually only arises in cumulonimbus (thunderstorm) clouds.

I genuinely didn't know that. I've learnt something new today!

Thanks, pretty much everyone I know was expecting the 'clearing of the air' after the storm so I guess we were all wrong in my social circle.

I definitely learnt something new from this thread, thanks everyone :) I shall look forward to sharing this knowledge with others :)
