The music hall entertainer George Formby Senior (1875–1921) was born as James Lawler Booth in Ashton-under-Lyne. He is also known as the father of English actor, singer-songwriter and comedian George Formby Junior (1904 - 1961), who was born as George Hoy Booth. He, however, was born in Wigan.
