The music hall entertainer George Formby Senior (1875–1921) was born as James Lawler Booth in Ashton-under-Lyne. He is also known as the father of English actor, singer-songwriter and comedian George Formby Junior (1904 - 1961), who was born as George Hoy Booth. He, however, was born in Wigan.

Foulridge was once a township in the ancient parish of Whalley. The use of the term 'township' persisted and has recently been revived as a name for subdivisions of boroughs in northern England.
In Shropshire, the name of Ruyton-XI-Towns preserves the memory only of medieval townships, eleven of which had been united under one manor
