Holy Trinity Church, Throcking is the smallest of the five parishes that form the United Benefice of Ardeley, Benington, Cottered, Throcking and Walkern.

At the 2021 census, Cottered held a population of 623. Great Ouseburn, North Yorkshire also held the same number.

Whixley in North Yorkshire was also once administered by the Upper Division of the Claro Wapentake.

The Church of the Ascension, Whixley dates back to at least the 12th and 14th centuries. It was closed for 16 months between 1861 and July 1862 for renovations carried out by Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811 – 1878), which cost £2,949 (equivalent to £310,000 in 2025). A later renovation by Scott (in 1864) was St Leonard's Church, Yarpole, Herefordshire.
