Nicholas Breakspear (or Brekespear) (c. 1100 – 1159) was born in Abbotts Langley, Hertfordshire and was thought to have been educated at St Albans. He was the only Pope to have been born in England and the first Pope from an English-speaking country. He took the name of Pope Adrian (or Hadrian) IV (Latin: Hadrianus IV)and was the head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States between 1154 until his death in 1159.

The bard Bedw Brwnllys was a resident of Bronllys in the 15th Century. He wrote (amongst many other things) an elegy to Sir Richard Herbert of Coldbrook, Llanover, Monmouthshire. The Brynmawr Rubber Factory was a now-demolished building which was situated in the town and was designed and constructed between 1946 and 1952 by the Architects' Co-Partnership (ACP).
