Stanwix is a district of Carlisle, and is located on the north side of the River Eden, across from Carlisle city centre. The River Eden rises on Black Fell Moss, near the village of Outhgill and runs in a generally north-westerly direction through the Vale of Eden and Solway Plain before reaching the sea at the Solway Firth.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Sunbury-on-Thames is a Grade II* listed church. Built originally in the medieval period, it was rebuilt in 1752, and aisles added in extensive remodelling designed by the architect Samuel Sanders Teulon (1812 – 1873) in 1857.

Another example of his work can be seen at All Saints parish Church, Middleton Stoney.

This was a replacement for an older church; another example of this can be seen at St Peter's Church, Noss Mayo in Devon which was constructed in 1880 – 1882 to replace the Church of St Peter the Poor Fisherman as the parish church of Revelstoke.
