The town was home to two football clubs, Dunstable Town FC and AFC Dunstable, who both played at the Creasey Park Stadium. However, at the end of the 2025 / 2026 season, the former folded and merged with the latter to form Dunstable Town FC. The new club plays in the Spartan South Midlands Football League Premier Division; one of their opponents in the current season (2026 / 2027) will be Sawbridgeworth Town Football Club, who play at Crofters End, Sawbridgeworth.

The Vauxhall plant closed in 1987.

Horbury forms part of the Heavy Woollen District, a region of textile-focused industrial development in West Yorkshire, a name acquired because of the heavyweight cloth manufactured there from the early 19th century. The town of Heckmondwike is also part of the same District.
