Charles Henry Harrod was born in Lexden in 1799. After an initial foray into milling he went into the grocery trade. In the 1840s he opened a small shop on the Brompton Road, Knightsbridge, London and the rest, as they say, is history.

In August 1967 Roughlee suffered a severe flash flood which caused considerable damage to property. Almost exactly fifteen years earlier Lynmouth in North Devon also suffered a flash flood but with much worse consequences including devastation of part of the town and the loss of 34 lives.
