The village church of St Mary the Virgin, Buckland was built in 1380 and is a Grade II listed building. It was rebuilt in 1859 - 1860, under the supervision of the English architect, Henry Woodyer (1816–1896). Another example of his restoration work can be seen at the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Long Compton, Warwickshire, where this was carried out in 1862 – 1863.

The English divine Israel Tonge (1621 - 1680), also known as Ezerel or Ezreel Tongue, was an informer in and probably one of the inventors of the Popish Plot. He was at one stage appointed rector of Avon Dassett, although according to Tonge "illegall practices" prevented him taking up the position; he was born at Tickhill, near Doncaster.

The Macclesfield Canal was built between 1826 and 1831, linking Macclesfield to Marple to the north and Kidsgrove to the south.
And a splendid canal walk it is.
RJ Mitchell was born in Kidsgrove, and became well known for his work at Supermarine. They were based in Southampton
Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener was amongst many granted the freedom of Southampton.

Kitchener was born in Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland.

The village's most famous son and benefactor was Richard Peek (1782-1867), a tea merchant who retired here after being one of the Sheriffs of London. Born in Loddiswell, he died in Kingsbridge, Devon.
