Ropsley in Lincolnshire was also once under the jurisdiction of the Grantham Poor Law Union.William of Ockham was a Franciscan Friar and philosopher born in Ockham in about 1287. He was the first to state concisely the principle of Occam's Razor, that in explaining a phenomenon one should always opt for an explanation in terms of the fewest possible causes, factors, or variables. His principle was supported, restated and used three hundred years later, not least in propounding his law of gravitation to explain planetary motion, by Isaac Newton. Newton was born in Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth in Lincolnshire.
