The English poet and broadcaster Frances Margaret Horovitz (née Hooker; 1938 – 1983) is buried in St John The Baptist Church, Orcop, which is known as 'The Poets Church' because of this. She was born in Walthamstow, London, and died in the Royal Marsden Hospital, London at the age of 45.

The former Daily Express Building in Great Ancoats Street was designed by the English engineer and architect , (1890 – 1969) in 1939; it was Grade II* Listed in 1974. Sir Evan Owen Williams was also the principal engineer for the Gravelly Hill Interchange (known popularly as Spaghetti Junction) in the Gravelly Hill area of Birmingham, which opened on 24th May 1972.

In 1795, Joseph Mallord William (J M W) Turner RA (1775 – 1851) used a sketch he made at Aberdulais of the waterfall and cornmill to paint his watercolour "Aberdulais Mill, Glamorganshire" which hangs at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. "Saltash with the Water Ferry" is an 1811 landscape painting by Turner which depicts the town of Saltash on the River Tamar, directly across from the major port of Plymouth in Devon. A ferry ran between the two settlements and is depicted in the painting, which shows an inn and several smaller craft.

Arnold was the location of Home Brewery, famous for its trademark Robin Hood logo on beermats. The brewery remained independent until 1986, when the family owners sold it (along with 450 pubs the brewery owned in Nottinghamshire) to Scottish & Newcastle.

Scottish & Newcastle gradually ran down production by subcontracting its brewing to Mansfield Brewery resulting in the eventual closure of the brewery in 1996.

Bristol has an historic pub, built in 1664, called the Llandoger Trow. It was founded by a sea captain named Captain Hawkins, who originally hailed from Llandogo on the River Wye, between Monmouth and Chepstow....a former inland port which was once noted for building trows, a type of flat-bottomed cargo boat for shallow rivers.
