A little to my surprise, it turns out that England appears to be quite full of Longfords -- seven of them (to say nothing of Longford, county town of a county in Leinster, Ireland). Am choosing, as another to associate with that in Hillingdon: Longford in Derbyshire; where I have in fact been -- between Derby and Uttoxeter.

The author / thinker / social commentator H.G. Wells (1866 -- 1946) was briefly in his youth, a teacher at a private school in the last post's settlement -- Holt Academy. A similar youthful episode in his life, had him doing the same at Midhurst Grammar School, Midhurst, West Sussex.

More about H.G. Wells, would you believe it -- acceptably, it is hoped. (The forthcoming HGW matter would seem, I fear, to threaten to be "as clear as mud".) Wells's science-fiction story The Invisible Man is set in Iping. In his novel The History of Mr. Polly: the eponymous hero lives in (and hates) the town of Fishbourne (sometimes alternatively rendered as Foxbourne) -- essentially a fictional settlement, and not to be confused with either the real Fishbourne in West Sussex, or that in the Isle of Wight. Mr. Polly's detested dwelling-place is thought to be based on Sandgate, Kent -- between Folkestone and Hythe -- where Wells lived for a number of years.

Sandgate was the birthplace of Hattie Jacques. She was married - in a somewhat less than ideal partnership - to John le Mesurier, who was born in Bedford.
