Grizedale Hall at Grizedale, Cumbria -- south of Hawkshead -- was also in World War II, the site of a specialised kind of camp for German prisoners-of-war. Hard-core Nazis were concentrated at Watten; Grizedale Hall's "clientele" were largely senior officers in the German armed forces, including many submarine officers: the camp was unofficially styled "The U-Boat Hotel".
