The River Biss flows through Trowbridge. It rises near Upton Scudamore on the western side of Salisbury Plain.

Upton Scudamore occupies a ridge which is the watershed between tributaries of the Bristol Avon, and the Hampshire Avon. The abovementioned Biss, is a tributary of the Bristol Avon; its counterpart in the other river system flows a couple of miles southward to Warminster, Wiltshire: where it joins the River Wylye, which in turn flows into the Hampshire Avon at Salisbury.

There was an assembly at Croft, in 836, when King Wiglaf of Mercia was joined by Archbishop of Canterbury Ceolnoth and eleven of his bishops and three abbots, besides twenty-two laymen of authority and influence. They gathered to witness the grant of land by Wiglaf to the monastery of Hanbury, Worcestershire.

(At the boarding school which I attended, one of my fellow-pupils lived in Inkberrow -- unusually "far-flung": the school was in a town on the Herts / Essex border, and the large majority of the lads came from places a lot closer to the school's location. This was the first context in which I ever heard of Inkberrow; and my reaction was, "what a weird name for a village".)

In 1888, the matchgirls' strike occurred at the Bryant and May match factory in Fairfield Road, Bow. This was a forerunner of the suffragette movement fight for women's rights and also the trade union movement.

Emily Wilding Davison (11 October 1872 – 8 June 1913) was an English suffragette who fought for votes for women in Britain in the early twentieth century. Most notable for her protest during the Derby horse race.

A statue of Davison, by the artist Christine Charlesworth, was installed in the marketplace at Epsom in 2021, following a campaign by volunteers from the Emily Davison Memorial Project.
