A peculiarity of the lead mining industry that took place in Derbyshire was the Barmote Court. The venue alternating between Stoney Middleton and Eyam until the early 20th century.
There were two barmote courts, one covering the High Peak, and one covering the Low Peak. Since 1994, the two have met together, once a year, at Wirksworth. In line with tradition, bread, cheese, clay pipes and tobacco are provided at the meetings, and a representative of the monarch who is the Lord of the Field attends.
