We learn that the Thorndon Leek Club, founded in 1995, "celebrates the village community spirit through socials, competitions, and local events". One assumes -- though the reference doesn't spell it out -- that the "emblematic" leek mentioned, is the vegetable of that name. It has long been traditionally held, that our islands' first-ranking area for the competitive growing of leeks (including giant ones) is Tyneside and thereabouts. For many years, Ashington, Northumberland -- east of Morpeth -- held the World Champion Leek and Onion Competition.
