Coughton lies on the Birmingham–Alcester A435 road. Here it follows the line of the Roman road, Icknield Street, which runs from the Fosse Way at Bourton on the Water in Gloucestershire to Templeborough (historically Templebrough) in South Yorkshire.

Sometimes one feels mild astonishment, at discovering how large a number of settlements there are in Britain with a particular name -- few of which, if any, one had known of previously. The gazetteer of my Michelin Britain road atlas lists -- in addition to the above-bolded Glamorgan spot, and the well-known joint northernmost terminus of Great Britain's rail system -- ten other ("just-plain") Wick's, in G.B. and the Shetland Isles. Out of these, I am opting for Wick, Worcestershire: just east of Pershore.

Per our friend Wiki -- some rather extraordinary material from times gone by, concerning Chiddingfold. One would likely entertain "rural idyll" notions re such a settlement as this -- sleepy and well-behaved; but at times, not so on / around November 5th. Worth quoting from Wiki: "The Guy Fawkes festivities saw in 1887 the village policeman's house attacked by a mob -- he was later transferred elsewhere -- he may have set the fire early or failed to prevent it from being lit before time. The event of 1929 faced wider unrest, culminating a week later with talk of ducking innocent Sgt. Brake into the pond being stalled by 200 Surrey officers using specially requisitioned buses; the village pubs were ordered to close and a JP was on hand to read the Riot Act should it have proved necessary."

Unruly behaviour on Bonfire Night is, regrettably, not unknown nowadays either. The ceremonies concerned, in Edinburgh in 2023, set off clashes between crowds of young people and police; with fireworks, and petrol bombs, being thrown by the youthful locals.
