We owe to the 19th-century American humorist and folklorist Charles Godfrey Leland -- who spent a fair amount of time in England -- a poem about East and West Cowes, commencing:

The two great Cowes that in loud thunder roar / This on the eastern, that the western shore...

Leland's works are in the main held in quite high regard; maybe he was having an off-day with the above -- which does bring to my mind a favourite of mine in this game, Willam McGonagall of Dundee: notorious as possibly the most dreadful poet ever to write in the English language. Among old William's enormous output, are quite a number of paeans of praise for assorted Scottish beauty-spots: including one of fourteen thoroughly dire verses, about Oban, Argyll and Bute -- which begins:

Oh ! beautiful Oban with your lovely bay / Your surroundings are magnificent on a fine summer-day...

Crieff in Perth and Kinross also has a malt whisky distillery.
(This town is the subject of another ghastly praiseful poem by W. McG.)

The only two remaining hydropathic hotels (fancy expression for a spa-related ditto) in Scotland: are at Crieff; and at Peebles, Scottish Borders.

Being perhaps a bit cheeky -- while Innerleithen is twinned with the settlement of Thondwe in Malawi; Mtwara in neighbouring Tanzania, also has a British "twin": in the shape of Redditch, Worcestershire.

Robert Burns had in his lifetime, strong associations with both Kilmarnock; and Mauchline, East Ayrshire, not very far south of Kilmarnock. There are monuments / memorials to the poet, in both settlements.

Findhorn in Moray is three miles north-west of Kinloss; and is, like Kinloss, on the B9011 road.

The Scottish Police College is at Kincardine. Its London-area equivalent is at Hendon, London Borough of Barnet.

Barrel being scraped, somewhat: another three-syllable "Colin..." settlement is Colintraive, Argyll and Bute -- on the "mainland" side of the Kyles of Bute.

I learn that Glendaruel has been the inspiration for a number of bagpipe tunes: one being The Glendaruel Highlanders. Set to this tune, are the words of the popular Scottish song Campbeltown Loch -- expressing wishfulness for said liquid body to be composed not of water, but whisky. The loch-related Campbeltown is yet again in Argyll and Bute -- near the southern end of the Kintyre peninsula (and incidentally, with significance for narrow-gauge devotees).

Great Yarmouth's Minster Church of St. Nicholas is the third-largest parish church in England. The second-largest is Beverley Minster at Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire.

Rochdale, Greater Manchester, is also twinned with a settlement in the German State of Nordrhein-Westfalen. Bridlington's "twin" is Bad Salzuflen; Rochdale's is Bielefeld.

We've been here before -- but, "desperation city", a bit. Edinburgh has an almost-namesake in the US State of Texas: Edinburg -- pretty well as far south as you can get in Texas, and indeed in the USA. There is a settlement in Texas, which shares the name of Guthrie -- in Angus, between Arbroath and Brechin.

Hamilton's Old Parish Church is the only church designed by the Scottish architect, mason and entrepreneur William Adam (1689 -- 1748). Another noteworthy work designed by Adam, is the "stately home" of Duff House at Banff, Aberdeenshire.
