Derrynane House near Caherdaniel was at one stage, home to Daniel (name-wise, association or coincidence?) O'Connell, "The Liberator", 1775 -- 1847: lawyer, politician, and renowned campaigner for a better deal for Catholic Ireland as a part of the United Kingdom. In his legal capacity, O'Connell participated in a celebrated trial in 1829, involving Doneraile, Co. Cork -- seven-or-so miles north of Mallow: O'Connell was able therein, to save several local anti-British-rule so-called "conspirators", from the ultimate penalty.
