Simonburn lies on a minor un-named road which joins the B6320 near the Nunwick Estate. Travelling North, this road passes through the village of Wark, Northumberland.

The poet and artist (and brother of the famous literary sisters) Branwell Bronte, lived in Broughton for six months in 1840. He was born in Thornton, near Bradford, in 1817.

In 1964, Whitehaven was identified as one of 51 "gem towns" by the Council for British Archaeology. This was due to the historic quality of the town environment, and they were historic towns and cities that were thought to be "particularly splendid and precious". Another town to be named on the list was Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire.

Gatley used to be a centre of button making. Buttons are still made in the UK by Courtney & Co at Bourton on the Water in Gloucestershire.
