The folk-song The Collier Lass tells of one Polly Parker from Worsley, who follows that trade; the song would indicate that it's an occupation which she endures, rather than enjoys. Another young lady in -- in the broadest terms -- employment in the industrial sphere; and celebrated in that musical genre: is Cushie Butterfield of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear -- who is employed in the selling of yellow clay (and is choosy as regards her suitors).

Canterbury is also twinned with a settlement in Sweden. Canterbury's "twin" is Molndal; Lancaster's is Vaxjo (incidental note -- long renowned as a three-gauge junction: standard / 1067mm / 891mm [a Swedish speciality]).

Trowbridge lies on the River Biss, a tributary of the Bristol Avon. The source of the Biss is near Upton Scudamore, Wiltshire.

Lynda Lee-Potter (1935 -- 2004) -- best known as a long-time columnist in the Daily Mail, in which role many found her rather short on charity / tolerance: was born in Leigh; she died in Wareham, Dorset.

Piddlehinton in Dorset also lies on the line of the River Piddle.
Schoolboy humour about the naming-theme of this patch of Dorset, can get tedious; but is often hard to resist. As with: the microbrewery in Piddlehinton which proudly calls itself the Piddle Brewery. Breweries' choosing perceivably "dodgy" names for themselves, is not altogether uncommon -- presumably, reckoned worth it for the sake of drawing people's attention. In similar case was the -- sadly, recently closed down -- Bad Seed Brewery in Malton, North Yorkshire.

The Rothiemurchus Forest -- a surviving remnant of the once vast Caledonian forests -- has the distinction of being one of the few locations where lives and breeds the Scottish crossbill, Loxia scotica: the only terrestrial vertebrate species endemic to the UK. Another stronghold of this bird species, a few miles distant, is the Abernethy / Loch Garten National Nature Reserve -- nearest settlement to which is Boat of Garten, Highland.

Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, also has a namesake settlement in the US State of Alabama.

Narberth has a reputation as the "foodie" capital of West Wales. Rivals for similar acclaim vis-a-vis North Yorkshire: are the settlements therein, of Malton; and Helmsley.

Kirkbymoorside has a pub called the Black Swan; as does North Walsham, Norfolk. Kirkbymoorside's "Black Swan", at any rate, is very old -- long pre-dating the discovery of Western Australia !

Oxford also gives its name to a registered rare traditional British pig breed: these being respectively the Tamworth, and the Oxford Sandy and Black.

Teversham in Cambridgeshire was also once administered by the Hundred of Flendish.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834 -- 92), celebrated Baptist divine / preacher / minister, preached his first sermon in public in Teversham in the winter of 1850 / 51. He was born in Kelvedon, Essex.

(Some of these Hundreds, wapentakes, etc., have amazing names. Flendish, no less -- has one thinking of a Lewis Carroll-type "portmanteau" of Flemish, and fiendish. [A Walloon extremist might well say, "same difference" :E .] )
