Falmouth, Cornwall, is also twinned with a settlement in the French departement of Finistere. Brecon's "twin" is Gouesnou (very near Brest); Falmouth's is Douarnenez.

The author Leo Walmsley (1892 -- 1966) lived in Fowey in the latter part of his life. He was born, however, in Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire -- which he wrote of in a series of novels, with the settlement thinly disguised as "Bramblewick".

Another favourite thing of mine in this game: Briggswath's war memorial shows ten men from the village, killed in World War I -- seems a grim number for such a small place, but, "luck of the draw" ... Helperthorpe, North Yorkshire, not hugely far away (between Malton and Bridlington), is a "Thankful Village" -- one of five in all Yorkshire -- all of whose men who served in WWI, came through alive.

RAF Fairfield was the only emergency landing site for NASA space shuttles in the UK, chosen for its long (3,045m) runway. But the only place where a shuttle touched down in Britain was Stansted Airport in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex - on 5 June 1983, on the back of a specially adapted Boeing 747.

Wicken Bonhunt is one of the very many places in "England and contiguous" which has -- or has had -- a pub called the Coach and Horses. W.B.'s hostelry of that name, closed; then reopened about ten years ago as a "Thai food pub serving real ales" (Thai, and / or British, same?). Caerwent, Monmouthshire, still has a -- conventional -- Coach and Horses pub.

Lincoln is another British place-name which is and has long been, quite popular as a man's "given name" in the USA: Lincoln, admittedly, helped by a certain gentleman -- life-span 1809 -- 65 -- of considerable eminence in those parts, whose surname it was.

Author Colin Dexter (1930 -- 2017), creator of Inspector Morse, was born and spent his childhood and youth in Stamford. He spent the latter part of his life, and died, in Oxford; where of course Morse lives / works / detects.

British World War II luminary Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (1887 -- 1976) was born in Kennington. In the first decade of the 20th century he attended the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, Berkshire: from which institution he was, according to Wiki, "almost expelled for rowdiness and violence" -- not the kind of thing which one associates with the highly virtuous, well-conducted, and indeed austere figure, as which this military gentleman would seem to be universally regarded.

William Penn (1644 -- 1718), the founder of Pennsylvania, spent the last years of his life in Ruscombe. During his eventful life, Penn spent an appreciable amount of time in Ireland -- largely in and around the city of Cork.

Ballincollig was the location of gunpowder mills, as was the district of Whitton in Twickenham, SW London. These were rather misleadingly named the Hounslow powder mills; remains can be seen in Crane Park

Actually, not that misleading, as the whole area was then part of Hounslow Heath.

"Last refuge of the rather desperate" -- there is another Whitton, far more rural than the Twickenham one: in the ultimate north of Lincolnshire, on the southern shore of the Humber a couple of miles east of the point where the Yorkshire Ouse and the Trent join to form that watercourse.

Perth - an interesting, if somewhat rummy sort of place. Like Perth, which has an art gallery in a former waterworks building, Westcliff-on-Sea in Essex has an arts centre called (and in) The Old Waterworks.

The River Sowe -- tributary of the Stratford Avon -- rises in Bedworth: flows south therefrom, including through Stoneleigh, Warwickshire; just south of which, it joins the Avon.
