The "over-Sands" suffix to Grange as above: was (quoting Wiki's, as often, rather comically coy way of telling of the doings of parish clergy) "added in the late 19th or early 20th century by the local vicar, who was fed up with his post going to Grange in Borrowdale near Keswick". Over decades -- particularly earlier ones -- following introduction in 1840 of Royal Mail nationwide postage using stamps: much alteration and standardisation of settlement-name forms did take place up and down the country, in the interests of helping post to get to the right destination. A 19th-century instance of this -- which I've mentioned before in the game -- involved Inveraray, Argyll and Bute; and Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. Under Royal Mail aegis, these two towns' names were officially standardised thus. Previously, as well as general "permissiveness" as regards spelling: many correspondents had written the names as "Inverary" and "Inverury" respectively, with confusion often resulting.
