The celebrated First World War poet Wilfred Owen (1893 -- 1918; killed in action very shortly before the end of the war) was born in Oswestry. He was on "home service" duties for a time in early 1918, at Ripon, North Yorkshire.

Rothesay, Argyll and Bute, also has a namesake settlement in the Canadian province of New Brunswick.

Mingulay is the second largest of the Barra Isles, also known as the Bishop's Isles, a small archipelago in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. They lie south of the island of Barra, for which they are named. Many of the islands are extremely small; only the largest, Vatersay remains inhabited (Mingulay has not been inhabited since 1912). Vatersay is the southernmost and westernmost inhabited island in the Outer Hebrides, and the settlement of Caolas on the north coast of the island is the westernmost permanently inhabited place in Scotland. The main village, also called Vatersay, is in the south of the island.

A pair of white-tailed sea eagles (Halliaeetus albicilla) are resident in the Glenelg area. In recent years, there has been a project to reintroduce birds of this species -- after a couple / three centuries' absence from the scene -- to the Isle of Wight: a good place to see them there, is the nature reserve at Newtown, I.O.W.

The Southampton and England footballer Michael Roger ("Mick") Channon was born in Orcheston on 28th November 1948. Following his football career, he followed an existing interest in horse racing and began working as an assistant trainer, before becoming a licensed trainer in his own right in 1990. He initially had ten horses. He then moved to the West Isley stables near Newbury, where he was training until he retired at the end of 2022.

I take it that the settlement concerned, is West ILsley (second letter, "l"). There is reckoned to have taken place near there, in 871 A.D., the battle of Ashdown; in which Alfred the Great (shortly before his actual accession to the throne) defeated a Danish army. Another battle in which Alf gave the Danes a good duffing-up, was Ethandune (878 A.D.): location considered to be Edington, Wiltshire -- a little way east of Westbury.

The village of Semington, Wiltshire, lies a couple of miles north-west of Keevil: much of Keevil parish's north-eastern boundary follows the Semington Brook.

Yes, it is - apologies for my poor spelling!

Moving on .... The River Avon and the Kennet and Avon Canal, half a mile apart, define the natural boundaries of the hamlet of Whaddon. The river separates Whaddon from the village of Holt, and the canal separates it from Hilperton and Semington.

D.H. Lawrence -- coming from these parts -- borrowed the name of Teversal, changing it slightly to "Tevershall"; as the location of his fictional Wragby Hall, home of Lady Chatterley in his famous / notorious novel. There is of course a real town of Wragby in neighbouring Lincolnshire.

Asgarby in Lincolnshire was also once under the jurisdiction of the Horncastle Poor Law Union.

I'm going to be annoying: there are two Asgarbys in Lincolnshire -- the above-bolded, a few miles east of Horncastle; and the other Asgarby, a little way east of Sleaford.

Since one was stated to be under the jurisdiction of the Horncastle Poor Law Union, it will be that one.

Sorry -- I phrased things badly -- didn't mean to object to Asgarby (Horncastle); was just seeking to make the association, be to the other (Sleaford) Asgarby; following participant, to pick up from that settlement. Is that "legit"; or should adjustment be made?

If that's your association then seems fair enough.
