Deal Pier is the last remaining fully intact leisure pier in Kent. There have been three separate piers in the town's history, with the first being designed by Sir John Renniw and built in 1838. John Rennie was born in Southwark, London, on 30th August 1794 and died at Bengeo, near Hertford, on 3rd September 1874, just after his 80th birthday.

Bengeo's name originally signified "spur or ridge over the River Beane" -- a tributary of the River Lea. Further up the course of the Beane, lies the hamlet of Cromer (Hertfordshire) -- not to be confused with the bigger and better-known Norfolk settlement.

Aunby is situated on the West Glen River; which joins the main River Glen a fairly short way southward. Some ten miles north of Aunby, also on the West Glen -- and a little way east of Grantham -- lies the village of Boothby Pagnell (all these places in Lincolnshire).

Stroxton in Lincolnshire was also once administered by the ancient Wapentake of Winniebriggs and Theo.

I love that Wapentake name -- impression definitely got, somehow, that Winnie was the one who called the shots in that relationship !

A pronunciation oddity in this general part of the world; is that for settlements with spellings as that of Stroxton (there are a number of different ones): pronunciation is, as to rhyme with that nautical officer the Bo'sun -- the "x" disappears when the name is said. Croxton Kerrial -- a few miles away, across the border in Leicestershire -- is pronounced "Crowson Carrial".

Buried at Keighley is Christopher Ingham: a Napoleonic Wars veteran and hero whose career in those hostilities, bears considerable similarities to that of Richard Sharpe, hero of the series of historical thrillers by Bernard Cornwell -- it is thought that Ingham may well have been the real-life inspiration for the fictional Sharpe. Cornwell -- author of many novels on assorted adventure / history / war themes -- lived in his youth at Thundersley, Essex (near Basildon).

Orsett has a ring-shaped earthwork known as 'Bishop Bonner's Palace', so-called as it was the site of a home of the Bishops of London, of whom Bonner was one. But their main residence from the 11th century until 1973 was Fulham Palace in Fulham, SW London.

The Hurlingham Club is an exclusive private social and athletic club located in Ranelagh Gardens, Fulham. It was founded in 1869 as the successor to The Gun Club; this was formed in 1860 at the Hornsey Wood Tavern, which stood in what today is Finsbury Park in Harringay, London.

In 1864, John Issac Thornycroft, founder of the John I Thornycroft & Company Limited shipbuilding company, established a yard at Church Wharf at the west end of Chiswick Mall. The shipyard built the first naval destroyer, HMS Daring of the Daring class, in 1893. To cater for the increasing size of warships, Thornycroft moved its shipyard to Woolston, Southampton in 1909, where their successor company still operates.
