The cirl bunting (Emberiza cirlus) just counts, as it were, as a member of Britain's wildlife. This species is confined to a fairly small area of south Devon: can be seen around Galmpton; and the bird, pictured, is the mascot on village signs for Stokeinteignhead, some ten miles to the north.

Michael Bentine (1922 -- 96) -- comedian, writer, and "the fourth Goon" -- was born in Watford; he started his acting career in a touring company in Cardiff. (I'll always think of Bentine first and foremost: as the creator of the Bumblies -- strange comical creatures from the planet Bumble, beloved by me in childhood.)

Salford's name comes from the Old English Sealhford = ford by willow, or sallow, trees ("sallow" from the Latin salix = willow). The name of Sallins, Co. Kildare (about 20 miles west of Dublin) is similarly derived -- via its Irish name "Na Sollain"-- from saileach = sallow / willow.

The city centre of Cork was badly damaged on the night of 11-12 December 1920 by fires started by police and soldiers after an IRA attack on a British military patrol. Balbriggan, Co Dublin, was also burned in reprisal for an IRA attack on 20 September 1920.

Belfast-born comedian Frank Carson lived in Balbriggan for many years - serving two terms as mayor - but later moved to Blackpool, Lancashire, where he died in 2012.

Motherwell is -- rather neatly -- twinned with Motherwell in the Eastern Cape area of South Africa. Cathcart -- area of Glasgow City Council -- also has a namesake settlement in the Eastern Cape; but is not twinned with it.

Kendal Parish Church, also known as the Holy Trinity Church contains two organs. The main organ is at the West End, and was constructed by J W Walker in 1969, incorporating an earlier instrument by Willis. Another of their organs is at the Church of St Margaret of Antioch, which is the Anglican parish church for Northam near Bideford in Devon in 1866.

Manuden has a church dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin; as does another village a little way from Bishop's Stortford, viz. Birchanger, Essex. (This settlement's name comes from the Old English Bircehangra = "wooded slope growing with birch trees". My mother -- a big-time pronunciation-botcher -- once, when in that area, pronounced the village concerned, as "Burr-changer" -- as in, one who changes burrs ...)

Wicken Bonhunt is in area of the East of England known as "The Hundred Parishes" This is an area with no formal recognition or status, albeit that the concept has the blessing of county and district authorities. There are actually 103 parishes; another of them is Flitch Green, a civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex.

Flitch Green is a relatively recent development, built on the site of an old sugar beet factory. Another place which once featured a -- now defunct -- sugar beet factory: is Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

The Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles is the mother church of the Metropolitan Province of Cashel and the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. Work commenced in 1865, and the church was consecrated by Archbishop Thomas Croke on 21st June 1879.The architect was James Joseph McCarthy, who was famous for his design of ecclesiastical buildings. Another of his works is Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Ballingary, County Limerick.

The village of Bruree is located on the River Maigue, which rises in the Milford area of north County Cork. It then flows north through Bruree, after which it augmented by the River Morning Star. It flows through Croom and Adare before entering the Shannon Estuary.

Going to fall back on something I've used more than once before in the game -- the humorous song The Limerick Rake -- which among other features, achieves an impressive tally of County Limerick settlements named in its lyrics: including Croom (and Bruree); and the town of Askeaton, in the same county but some way to the north-west.

Rathkeale has, unfortunately, a name as the centre for much criminal activity. The same applied a couple of centuries ago to Deal, Kent -- then more deeply involved in the smuggling business, than any other settlement in Britain.
