The Forest of Dean was also involved in coal mining, Ruardean Woodside is close to the former East Slade mine, and in keeping with the latest events, there also was a Princess Royal mine in the Forest

Winifred Foley (1914-2009), author of A Child in the Forest (an account of her childhood and youth in the Forest of Dean, and later in service in London), went to school in Ruardean Woodside. She was born in Brierley, Gloucestershire, and died in Cheltenham.

Shurdington is adjacent to Cooper's Hill, where the celebrated cheese-rolling event takes place every Spring Bank Holiday. Another curious annual springtime custom goes on at Hungerford, Berkshire: at Hocktide (the second Tuesday after Easter). Two florally decorated Tuttimen, and an Orange Man (nothing to do with Northern Ireland) visit every household in the town with commoners' rights. Formerly this was to collect money to ensure fishing / grazing rights; collected nowadays, are kisses from each lady of the house. These bods are accompanied by six Tutti Girls, drawn from the local school.

William of Orange was offered the crown of England at the Bear Inn at Hungerford in 1688 following his invasion through the port of Brixham.
Perhaps this is, after all, how the Hocktide Orange Man (as per my post above) originated?

Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, also holds an annual Pirate Festival. Brixham's is usually in early May; Stockton's, in late June.

There is another Hambrook in West Sussex, five miles west of Chichester; the parish concerned is named in full, Chidham and Hambrook.

Hambrook Hill Farm in Hambrook was a centre for the breeding and registration of Falabella horses, a miniature species first bred in Argentina in 1868. At the other end of the scale, the Shire Horse Society is based at Rockingham Castle, Rockingham, Northamptonshire.

Pat Porteous VC is buried in Funtington churchyard. He took part in a raid on Dieppe, which is served by ferries from Newhaven.

Manchester's coat of arms includes bees; there is a bee on the arms of Bedworth, Warwickshire.

(@John Griffiths: thank you for "rescue" here; I seem to have much trouble in this game, regarding really big cities: re Manchester, was about to take "the last resort of the desperate" -- namesake settlements in the USA !)

Bedworth has a pub called the Black Bank. All of the following, in Cambridgeshire: north of Ely, there is a tiny hamlet called Black Bank, about which there's apparently nothing to be said -- nearest settlement to it of any size, would appear to be the village of Little Downham.

Belchamp Otten has a church dedicated to St. Ethelbert and All Saints -- I'd imagine, not a very common combination. Ramsgate, Kent, has a St. Ethelbert's (plain and simple) church.

Keswick has a pencil museum; Birmingham has a pen museum.

And I was delighted to find that there is a pencil sharpener museum in Logan, Ohio, sadly outside the parameters of our game.

The village of Drayton Bassett is on the Heart of England Way, a footpath which can also be used by off-road bicyclists. Shustoke is a village in North Warwickshire which also lies on the same footpath.
