Penarth's promotional slogan in Victorian times was "The Garden by the Sea". In similar hyperbolic vein for such matters in those times: Aberystwyth was trumpeted as "the Biarritz of Wales".

"Sailing rather close to the wind" here: born in Neath, was the film star Ray Milland (1907 -- 1986, born Alfred Jones); whose first film role was in the 1929 film The Flying Scotsman -- revolving around the eponymous train and locomotive. The senior male lead in that film was played by Moore Marriott; who some years later, had one of the chief roles in Oh Mr. Porter !: filmed largely at Cliddesden, Hampshire.

Todmorden in West Yorkshire also partakes in the 'Incredible Edible' scheme, whereby vegetables and herbs are planted in boxes in public spaces and the resulting crops are freely available for the townspeople to take home and consume.

Although Walsden CC is now situated in the county of West Yorkshire, the club currently plays in the Lancashire League. Their last match (Saturday 16th July) was away to Greenmount CC, who play at Brandlesholme Road, Greenmount, Bury, and resulted in a nine wicket victory.

A connection concerning the Wallace and Gromit "Clay-mation" comic films -- touching on different "might-have-been" romantic relationships for "joint hero" Wallace the inventor. In The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, said figure is Lady Tottington. In A Close Shave, one of the villains is the dog Preston, who belongs to the blameless shopkeeper Wendolene; sheep-rustling involving Preston, causes her and Wallace to become acquainted.

Desperation here -- "Ingol" is the first two syllables of the name of the city in Bavaria, Germany: of Ingolstadt (according to the sci-fi / fantasy novel cycle by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson, a centre of the activities of that supposed secretly-world-controlling cabal, the Illuminati). Ingolstadt is twinned with Kirkcaldy, Fife.

The 1980s darts legend Jocky Wilson was born and spent much of his life in Kirkcaldy.
In 1982 Wilson beat fellow elite darts professional John Lowe in the British Darts Organisation World Championship. John Lowe's birthplace was the Derbyshire village of Tupton.

For birders: the Ribble estuary and sands off Lytham St Annes, is an excellent place to see in large numbers that wading bird the knot (Calidris canutus). The same, some way southward down that coast, is true of the mouth of the Dee estuary around the Hilbre Islands, just off West Kirby (Merseyside).

Museums on strange themes: Southport has, as we know, a lawnmower museum. Leeds Castle -- nearest settlement Broomfield, Kent -- a little way east of Maidstone: has a dog-collar museum. (We had Leeds Castle and Broomfield not quite a month ago; but, I take it, "no problem".)

Being pedantic here; but Kent has two Broomfields. As I read matters, one is linked with Blean and Seasalter, as above; but that near Leeds Castle, is the other Broomfield -- some twenty miles west-south-west, and some way inland.

Trust me to pick the wrong Broomfield.... that has now been struck-through.

You did note that the correct one had been recently mentioned on this quiz.

Loose in Kent was also once administered by the Hundred of Maidstone.

I just cannot resist this one -- according to a cherished (if of doubtful truth) anecdote: local units of the Women's Institute are, generally, officially titled "The [Maidstone -- or wherever it might be] Women's Institute". However -- by special dispensation, the units of that excellent institution at Loose, as above; and at Ugley, Essex (near Bishop's Stortford); are titled "The Women's Institute (****** Branch)". (And let's not get into Idle near Bradford, and its Working Men's Club ...)

Standon was the birthplace of Arthur Martin-Leake: one of only three people ever to have been awarded the Victoria Cross "twice over". For Martin-Leake, one was Boer War, the other World War I. Another of the three, is Charles Upham -- for separate World War II actions: Crete, and North Africa. Upham was a New Zealander, and spent little time in Britain; but in 1945, he did marry his fiancee in New Milton, Hampshire.
