Pete Waterman -- record producer and general "music person", and keen railway enthusiast -- was born in Coventry. One learns that he is a supporter of Walsall F.C.

Lanark is also twinned with a settlement in the French departement of Seine-Maritime. Newton Longville's "twin" is Longueville-sur-Scie; Lanark's, is Yvetot.

There is an iron suspension bridge which gives pedestrian access across the Clyde, from Blantyre to Bothwell; described by Wiki as a "conservation village", but which seems nevertheless to play host to plenty of real-life stuff.

Ystalfera in the upper Swansea Valley region also lies on the line of the Swansea Canal.

Something that has occurred before in this game, which I find irresistible: in August 1915 Professor Firmin Swinnen, organist of Antwerp Cathedral, gave an organ recital in Ystalfera. Plainly, he had taken refuge in Britain from the spot of bother then occurring in his homeland. Fantasies prompted, about confrontation after the war, between the Prof.; and whoever had sweated it out under the occupation and taken his cathedral place -- but maybe both were decent about it, and arranged things without rancour. Many Belgians took refuge in Britain in World War I -- a large number who did so, spent the time in Dartford, Kent, and found employment there.

Just west of Conwy, is the location where golf is reckoned first to have been played on Welsh soil. Its Scottish counterpart -- considered the place where golf was first (in the 17th century) properly played in Scotland, and thus in the British Isles -- is near Musselburgh, East Lothian.

The name Granby is derived from old Norse during the Viking occupation of England, likewise Slaithwaite near Huddersfield, derived from thvelt, a woodland clearing.

Stalybridge was linked to Dunkinfield by the Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley & Dukinfield Joint Transport & Electricity Board. When the trams were replaced by trolleybuses, it never owned any trolleybuses itself but used those of Manchester Corporation and Ashton Under Lyme.

Dukinfields's coat of arms features a wheatsheaf; the coat of arms of Northwich features three of same. (An aside: on a "bash" in the last days of B.R. steam, involving a working which served among other places, Dukinfield; one of my companions quipped, "as opposed to duck-in-pond". Don't give up your day job, old chap...)

American poet Sylvia Plath is buried in one of the two churchyards in Heptonstall. Her erstwhile husband, Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, was born in nearby Mytholmroyd, but moved with his family to Mexborough in South Yorkshire at an early age,

The King's School, Rochester, is reckoned to be the second-oldest continuously running school in the world (founded 604 A.D.) The oldest -- by a fairly small margin -- is considered to be the school of the same name, in not-far-distant Canterbury.
