Brandeston features prominently, under its own name, in the 1966 novel by Ronald Bassett, Witchfinder General; this being based on the witch-hunting career during the English Civil War, of Matthew Hopkins, who is generally referred to under the same title as that of the book. Hopkins's activities, mostly in East Anglia, resulted in a great number of persons being executed for witchcraft -- with many confessions obtained by dubious means, even should one share the man's general beliefs about the Black Arts. Hopkins spent his last years at Manningtree, Essex; dying there in 1747.
