Arnside faces the estuary of the River Kent on the north-eastern corner of Morecambe Bay, within the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Arnside and Silverdale are the main villages in the area; another settlement is the village of Storth, which takes it's name from the old Norse name for a woody place.

Mousehole was one of the four Cornish towns attacked by the Spanish Armada in 1587, likewise nearby Penzance had several buildings damaged in the same raid

The Sandown class are fifteen minehunters built primarily for the Royal Navy by Vosper Thorneycroft. The British ships are named after coastal towns and cities; HMS Penzance is M106, and HMS Shoreham is M112.

Home base for the comedian Max Miller ("The Cheeky Chappie"), 1894 -- 1963, was Brighton or Shoreham, for nearly all his life. He married his wife Kathleen (a happy marriage for 42 years, till his death) in 1921 in Plymouth.

The Minster Church of St Andrew, also known as St Andrew's Church, Plymouth is the original parish church of Sutton, one of the three towns which were later combined to form the city of Plymouth. It is known to have been restored three times, the first time being in 1824 by John Foulston. He was a Plymouth based architect, but did some work outside the city as well. In 1818 he designed the asterisk-shaped Cornwall County Asylum at Bodmin; this later became known as St Lawrence's Hospital, and is now a Grade II* listed apartment building.

Kirkburton has a rapier dance team, who perform traditional Longsword (or Long Sword, depending on the location) dances each New Year's Day at pubs in the villages of Kirkburton and Highburton in addition to their numerous appearances at festivals elsewhere in the country. Rapier dancing was a tradition in the village up to the beginning of the 20th century, and was revived in 1974. The team adhere to what is largely believed to be the original dress of clogs, blue waistcoats and trousers with ribbons down the side. The final tradition, that of blackened faces, is only adopted during the New Year performances. Unlike many traditional dances in England, which are mainly performed by revival teams, Long Sword dances are often still performed by their own village teams, such as Grenoside Sword Dancers, who are based in the suburb of Sheffield known by that name.

The local football club, Thetford Town FC, play at Mundford Road, Thetford, and are currently in the Premier Division of the Eastern Counties Football League. Walsham-le-Willows FC play at Summer Road, in the village of Walsham-le-Willows, Suffolk; they are also currently members of the same competition.

The above-bolded village name would seem to celebrate the willow tree. Immediately to the south, is a village / hamlet group which appears to do the same for another tree species: Four Ashes, Great Ashfield, and -- largest, and about two miles south of Walsham-le-Willows -- Badwell Ash (alternatively titled Badwell-of-the-Ash).

The Tower and the South Porch of St Mary's Church, Badwell Ash, were built in the late C15, probably in the decade after 1476 by a master mason from North Lopham, Thomas Aldrych. Locally, the Aldrych family built church towers at Elmswell, Ixworth, Rougham and Mendelsham as well as several others in both Norfolk and Suffolk - but they didn't seem to have been responsible for St Nicholas' Church, North Lopham which, it seems, was was built by a W Bigod.

Freckleton in Lancashire, west of Preston, was also the scene of a regrettable happening late in World War II, involving an aircraft-related mishap (it so happened, that the accidents in both cases involved American planes). At North Lopham, two planes collided in the air: all occupants killed, but no civilian casualties. At Freckleton, a plane trying to land at the nearby airfield during stormy weather, crashed on the village: total death toll 61, both military personnel and civilians.

Conwy Morfa, a marshy spit of land on the west side of the estuary, was the place where Hugh Iorys Hughes developed, and later built, the floating Mulberry Harbour used in Operation Overlord in World War II. The western side of Wigtown Bay, in the Solway Firth, was selected for the trials of the Harbour as the tides were similar to those on the expected invasion beaches in Normandy, a harbour was available at Garlieston, and the area's remoteness would simplify security matters.

The cartoonist Charles Gordon McClure (1885 -- 1933) was born in Garlieston; he died in Lenzie, Dunbartonshire. He plied his trade under the pseudonym of Dyke White: after a Garlieston location familiar to him in childhood, White Dyke Farm.

Lenzie is nowadays virtually a suburb of Kirkintilloch, was for many years had no licensed premises due to the old Scottish 'Veto Poll' legislation. Another place to which this formerly applied is Hyndland in the West End of Glasgow.
