In New Holland is an imposing -- in fact, "listed" -- building which was long (though no more) a pub / hotel, named variously the Yarborough Hotel, and the Lincoln Castle Hotel (sharing that name with one of the paddle-steamers which operated the ferry to Hull). "Yarborough" would seem to be a favourite name for hostelries in north Lincolnshire, but nowhere else -- the name being, of a titled family in those parts. The 2nd Baron Yarborough (1781 -- 1846), however, is commemorated far to the south. He married an I.O.W. heiress and moved to the island, where he founded Cowes's Royal Yacht Squadron. His memorial is a prominent obelisk on Culver Down, near Bembridge.
