The parish of Sopley contains the historical manor of Avon Tyrell (whose current actual manor house is only a little over a hundred years old). Walter Tyrell, head of the family, was the man who killed with an arrow (accidentally, or otherwise?) King William Rufus during a hunt in the nearby New Forest in 1100 (Tyrell fled immediately afterwards, fearing bad consequences). William Rufus's tomb is in Winchester Cathedral.

Sturminster Newton holds an annual Cheese Festival. Another venue with an annual cheese-related event -- in this case, competitive rolling of cheeses down a steep hill -- is Cooper's Hill near Gloucester.

Kingsholm Stadium, Gloucester was a host city for the Rugby World Cup in 1991. Another venue used during that competition was the Cross Green ground in the east of Otley, West Yorkshire.

Dingwall gets a glancing mention in one of W.S. Gilbert (of "and Sullivan")'s Bab Ballads bonkers-verse offerings. So does Epsom: in the Ballad called Emily, John, James and I -- a tale of improbable doings on Derby Day.

One of Herne Bay's oldest buildings is the late-18th-century, appropriately named, Ship Inn. A "mega-inland" place with a hostelry of the same name, is Highley, Shropshire -- in the Severn Valley -- well, river craft, I suppose...

Another generally "Midland" town mentioned in passing by Shakespeare's anti-hero Sir John Falstaff, in the plays: is Daventry, Northamptonshire.

Farthingstone has the remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle now referred to as Castle Dykes. Scarborough refers to the moat round its much larger and more intact castle by the same name.

South Shields has a counterpart, North Shields, physically separated by the River Tyne and historically located within a different county.

Another settlement with a "North" cousin located across a substantial river estuary is Woolwich.

Ely, Cambridgeshire, is also situated in what is referred to as an "Isle", but is not one in the sense of "cut off by sea from the mainland". The "Black Isle" in which Rosemarkie lies, is in fact a peninsula; the "Isle of Ely" has always been essentially, an inland-waters matter.

Crathie, Aberdeenshire, is another place which is or has been favoured by the Royal Family for church attendance, when in the relevant part of the world.

Clarence Park, St Albans plays host to St Albans Cricket Club. The club currently runs four Saturday sides, playing in the Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League along with West Herts CC. Their main ground is in Watford, but they also play at The Hit or Miss Cricket Club, Penn Street, Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

Chesham is also in the same parliamentary constituency....and produced a landslide victory for the Lib-Dems over the Tories in a by-election earlier this year.
