This reserve is run by the RSPB, who were founded by the merger of two previous organisations dedicated to the protection of birds. One of these organisations was formed in Croydon, in south west London.

The English actor and singer Edward Albert Arthur Woodward OBE was born on 1st June 1930 in Croydon; he died on 16th November 2009, aged 79 in Truro, Cornwall.
The widespread Christmas custom of a service of nine lessons and carols -- happening most renownedly nowadays, at King's College Cambridge -- originated in Truro in 1880, under the aegis of the Bishop thereof at that time.

There used to be three venues for Greyhound racing in Cambridge, with the most significant one being the City Ground, which was active between 1968 and 1984. Most of today's stadiums are licensed by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB), although some others do not come under the control of the GBGB but, instead, licensed by the local authority. One of the latter is the Valley Stadium, Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed.
The Mynach part of the above-bolded settlement's name, is thought to derive from Welsh words signifying "marshy place"; not connected with the Welsh mynach = monk. In a similar way, the name of Nuneham Courtenay (Oxfordshire) is reckoned to be nothing to do with nuns.

Nuneham Courtenay has a Windmill Hill with no windmill. However the similarly named hill in the parish of Chalton, Hampshire, does have one.

Calver was home to a historic water-powered cotton mill, opened in 1778.

Rosser's sac spider (Clubiona rosserae), a rare native spider once thought to be extinct, has been found at Icklingham Heath, south-east of the village.
The spider was first re-discovered in 2010 at Chippenham Fen near the Cambridgeshire village of Fordham.

The names of the Royal Navy Ham Class Minesweepers were all chosen from villages ending in -ham. HMS Fordham was named after the village of Fordham; HMS Petersham was named after Petersham in Surrey.

The Church of St Mary-le-More, Wallingford is located in a prominent position in the town square behind the Town Hall. The nave and aisle were built in the 13th and 14th century, and the chancel was built later. However, all were rebuilt in 1854 to designs by the Gothic Revival architect David Brandon.

The capital of the Republic of Ireland; and a Lancashire seaside resort; have names with essentially the same meaning, but in -- or derived from -- different languages. "Dublin", from Classical Irish dubh = black / dark; and lind = pool. The Lancashire settlement is of course, Blackpool.
