Goole is also an inland port.

Rather uncommonly for English place-names, "Goole" comes from Middle English -- goule = stream, drain; Goole being a newer settlement than many -- first recorded in the 14th century. Also deriving from Middle English, are the various settlement-names ending in "-port". Example, Southport -- there was a settlement at that location before the Norman Conquest, but the name Southport came into being much later.

Harrogate features peripherally in Arthur Ransome's adventure stories for "children of all ages": it being the home of the tyrannical and generally disagreeable Great-Aunt of the Lake District-dwelling family of the books; who sometimes leaves her spa town for a spell in the Lakes, where she imposes a reign of terror for the duration of her visit. Another "real-world" settlement mentioned in the book series -- in those of same, set in the Norfolk Broads -- is Horning, where the young hero of those books lives with his family.

The English professional women's footballer Lilian (Lily) Parr was born in Union Street, Gerrard's Bridge, St Helen's on 26th April 1905. She is best known for playing for the Dick, Kerr's Ladies team, which was founded in 1917 and based in Preston, Lancashire.

The River Cassley in Sutherland, Northern Scotland, joins the River Oykel to form the Kyle of Sutherland at Invercassley. The main road bridge over the river is at Rosehall, halfway between the mouth and the impressive Achness Waterfall or Cassley Falls.

The estate adjacent to the hamlet of Rosehall was owned by the Dukes of Westminster until sold, many decades ago, to become a hotel. Another property of that noble family is of course Eaton Hall south of Chester -- nearest village Eccleston. (Eaton Hall has as we know, significance for miniature-railway lovers.)

The organ of St Mary's Church, Eccleston was built in 1899 by Gray & Davidson of London. A future employee of the company was Frederick Rothwell, who set up on his own with his three sons, and was responsible for renovations to the organ at the Temple Church, London, which is the centre of the wider Temple area of the capital.

The hamlet of Temple that is situated on Bodmin Moor also has a church with historical connections to the Knights Templar movement.

Springfield in Dumfries and Galloway also lies on the line of the River Sark.

A big attraction of Kelso is the stately home of Floors Castle, situated just outside the town. Much of the 1984 film Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes was shot on location there. There is a village of Greystoke in Cumbria, near Penrith -- the village does not in itself feature in the "Tarzan" fiction; it's generally reckoned that Edgar Rice Burroughs "borrowed" the name to apply to the noble family in his jungle tales.

"Desperationsville, just a little" -- about a mile north of the above-bolded settlement, is the village of Grovesend. Not so far from South Wales, but on the English side of border and Severn, there's another Grovesend; an area of Thornbury, South Gloucestershire.
