Dryburgh has a monument - The Temple of the Muses - to poet James Thompson, who (it is claimed) wrote the words of Rule, Britannia at The Dove pub in Hammersmith, west London.

The 'twistle' element in Tintwistle's name derives from an Old English term meaning 'confluence', and is also found in Haltwhistle and Twizel, both in Northumberland.

Etal has the only thatched pub in Northumberland. Fortunately for boozers who like grass roofs, there are plenty elsewhere, including the King 's Head in Mablethorpe, Lincs.

The name Appersett derives from Norse and means the 'Shieling by the apple tree'. The suffix "sett", is notable to Wensleydale; another example being the village of Burtersett.

Hannah Hauxwell was a Dales farmer who achieved some media fame as a result of her austere rural lifestyle and agreeable character. Another famous (or so I am informed by the internet) Hannah with a settlement-related surname is English actress Hannah Ware.
