Pontypridd has a notable stone arch bridge, built by William Edwards and completed in 1756 (Edwards had made three previous attempts to bridge the Taff at Pontypridd, all of which collapsed). The surviving structure, with a span of 140 ft, was for 40 years to be the longest single-span bridge in Britain, surpassing the 130 ft span Old Walton Bridge on the Thames, linking Walton-on-Thames in Surrey with Shepperton in Middlesex.
