Sir Robert Walpole, (1676 – 1745), who is generally regarded as the de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain was born in Houghton. When he resigned in 1742, King George II agreed to elevate him to the House of Lords as the Earl of Orford, in the County of Suffolk and Baron Walpole of Houghton in the County of Norfolk.

Since the 15th century, Dunwich has frequently been identified with Dommoc, the original seat of the Anglo-Saxon bishops of the Kingdom of East Anglia. However, many historians now prefer to locate Dommoc at Walton, which was the site of a Saxon shore fort.

Is that the same Walton which was reclaimed by the sea and currently nine miles offshore?

I think Ebbw is referring to the Walton that is now part of Felixstowe.

Thanks for that clarification..... Woodbridge also lies on the line of the River Deben.

Yes, that's right. Moving on …. The earliest record of Woodbridge as such dates from the mid-10th century, when it was acquired by St Aethelwold, Bishop of Winchester, as part of the endowment of the monastery that he helped to re-found at Ely, Cambridgeshire in 970.

One of the many events held in Hemingford Grey is the annual Hemingfords' Regatta. This has been held annually with the adjoining village of Hemingford Abbots since 1901 and believed to be among the oldest village regattas in the country.

Wandsworth takes its name from the River Wandle, which enters the River Thames at Wandsworth. Before getting to Wansdsworth, the river flows through (amongst other places) Colliers Wood in South West London.
