The English polar explorer Doctor Edward Adrian Wilson FZS was born in Cheltenham 23rd July 1872. He took part in Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition in 1912 and died on 29th March 1912 on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. Another member of that party who also died, albeit a few weeks before, was Captain Lawrence Edward Grace Oates, who had been born on 17th March 1880 in Putney, London.

Cirencester lies on the River Churn, the first tributary river of the River Thames, which it joins in Cricklade, Wiltshire.
