Johnny Briggs was an English left arm spin bowler who played for Lancashire County Cricket Club between 1879 and 1900 and remains the second-highest wicket-taker in the county's history after Brian Statham. He was born on 3rd October 1862 at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire and died on 11th January 1902 (aged 39) in Heald Green, Cheadle, Cheshire.

Sutton in Ashfield is home to the Sherwood Observatory. The Norman Lockyer Observatory is sited near Sidmouth in Devon. Both are astronomical observatories run by local amateurs and open to the public on certain evenings each year.

Gulval Church graveyard is home to the remains of local pirate and smuggler John 'Eyebrows' Thomas of Marazion. When he died (on 16th December 1753), the parish of Marazion refused to bury him and paid the nearby Gulval church to do the honours instead. His grave featured a skull (with eyebrows!) and crossbones.

Sir Richard Trevithick Tangye, the manufacturer of engines and other heavy equipment, was born at Illogan on 24th November 1833. As a young boy, he was sent to the Quaker Sidcot School in the village of Winscombe, Somerset.
