Sutton in Ashfield is home to the Sherwood Observatory. The Norman Lockyer Observatory is sited near Sidmouth in Devon. Both are astronomical observatories run by local amateurs and open to the public on certain evenings each year.

St Helens was the location of the first factory and head office of the Beecham pharmaceutical company.
Following several mergers and acquisitions, what remains of the Beechams brand is now under the control of GlaxoSmithKline plc, whose head office is in Brentford.

Gulval Church graveyard is home to the remains of local pirate and smuggler John 'Eyebrows' Thomas of Marazion. When he died (on 16th December 1753), the parish of Marazion refused to bury him and paid the nearby Gulval church to do the honours instead. His grave featured a skull (with eyebrows!) and crossbones.
