Scalloway is home to the North Atlantic Fisheries College, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands. Another part is West Highland College at Fort William.

Newhaven was once the terminal of a train ferry to France. Langstone (near Havant) was for a few years the terminal of a train ferry to the Isle of Wight.

The mill wheels at Catrine, 50 feet in diameter and built in 1828, were for a while the largest in the world. However in 1854 the 74 foot diameter Laxey wheel on the Isle of Man was built and took over the title!
