The Emirates Air Line was one of a number of fatuous projects backed by Boris Johnson, current MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, when he was Mayor of London, but the only one to be completed.
On the bank of the Thames at Staines is a monument called the "London Stone" which marked the upper limit of the City of London's jurisdiction. There are two similar lower markers, one on each shore. The southern one is at Yantlet Creek, near Grain.
The original Bymbo Steelworks was developed by John "Iron-Mad" Wilkinson following his move to the area in 1792. John Wilkinson was born in Little Clifton, Bridgefoot, Cumberland (now part of Cumbria) in 1728.
