The best-known landmark in Chesterfield is the Church of St Mary and All Saints with its crooked spire, originally built in the 14th century. The architect George Gilbert Scott carried out a restoration in 1843, when a new east window was inserted with stained glass by William Wailes, who lived at the Saltwell Estate, Gateshead from 1860 to his death in 1881.
