Strathpeffer is the home of Caberfeidh shinty club, twice winners of the Carmanachd Cup. Newtonmore is the game's most successful team. having won the cup 33 times.

Although the actor James Robertson Justice was not (as he claimed) born at Wigtown, he did have ancestral links with the area. He did, though, live at Orchardton House off Agnew Crescent, Wigtown between 1946 and 1950. He was, in fact, born James Norval Harald Justice on 15th June 1907 in Lee, London.

Rodney Marsh was born on 11th October 1944 in Hatfield, to Lilian and William Marsh. He grew up in the East End of London, and in fact his mother only spent a few days in Hertfordshire so as to avoid going into labour during the Blitz. He played for Queens Park Rangers between 1966 and 1972; QPR's home ground is at Loftus Road Stadium, which is in Shepherd's Bush, London.

Cosford Pumping Station, first built in the 1850s, abstracts water from the River Worfe and also from deep boreholes and sends it to Wolverhampton.
